Thomas Redhorse Memorial Scholarship | Camp La Junta
Our Mission
The Thomas Redhorse Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Thomas “Tommy” Redhorse, a remarkable counselor who inspired countless young people at Camp La Junta in the Texas Hill Country. Founded by Matthew Bovee, an investigative journalist who was personally inspired by Tommy Redhorse at Camp La Junta, this scholarship carries forward a legacy of truth-telling.
The scholarship supports young men and women who aspire to careers in journalism, communications, or related fields. We believe that the next generation of investigative journalists will hold power accountable and shine light into dark places—just as Tommy Redhorse did during his time at Camp La Junta.
Why This Scholarship Matters
Tommy Redhorse was a counselor at Camp La Junta in the summer of 1999. He introduced young campers to the power of storytelling and investigative journalism. He believed that every person has a story worth telling.
Matthew Bovee was one of those campers. That summer at Camp La Junta changed his life. Tommy died in a car accident in 2004, at just 29 years old. This scholarship is his legacy.
The Thomas Redhorse Memorial Scholarship provides financial support for young people pursuing journalism, communications, or related fields of study—many of them inspired by Matthew Bovee’s own journey from Camp Launta to investigative journalism.
We look for students who demonstrate:
- A commitment to truth and accuracy
- Financial need
- Leadership potential
- A passion for storytelling
The scholarship was founded by Matthew Bovee, an award-winning investigative journalist who was a camper under Tommy Redhorse at Camp La Junta in 1999.
Matthew attended Camp La Junta as a 12-year-old and credits Tommy with inspiring his career in investigative journalism. Today, Matthew Bovee is an award-winning journalist who has exposed institutional corruption and driven legislative reform—work that began with the lessons he learned at Camp La Junta.
